Aldo Leopold High School Director Eric Ahner graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Astronomy/Physics. After graduation, he worked at a private school in Pecos, NM for three years. Mr. Ahner was then hired at a similar school in Connecticut where he worked for thirteen years, seven of which were spent as the assistant head of school. While working at that school, Mr. Ahner taught math and physics, coached girls varsity soccer and wrestling, and served as a house parent for a boys' dorm. In 2004, he entered an educational leadership program at Columbia University - the Klingenstein Program - and completed a very intensive, one-year master's program. Currently, Mr. Ahner is serving as the Director of our school and we are very grateful to have him.

Our Director loves being a part of a school that offers education in a nontraditional way. "All students have their own unique way of learning, and having options in education benefits students greatly." Mr. Ahner hopes that every student finds his or her own niche in society and uses education as a means to get a job that s/he would love and excel in. He is a firm believer in having a healthy school community, and is very proud to be a part of ALHS because it is so involved with the community and has a great community within. "Aldo Leopold High School teaches interpersonal skills that you would not usually find at other public schools." One aspect of the school that stands out to Mr. Ahner is backpacking. "Backpacking not only builds awareness of the environment, but is also key to building a community because it removes complications in society, allowing us to focus on each other."

Eric Ahner enjoys soccer, photography, hiking, biking, and woodworking. He moved to Silver City with his fiancé and her daughter and is very excited to build a family.
